The Replacement

LETTER FROM THE OLD PADDLE TO ITS REPLACEMENT

Dear New Paddle,

Welcome. You are currently the missing piece.

I was the missing piece in February. Before me, a blue one was the missing piece, although we do not discuss the blue one. It has been reassigned to guests.

For your first week, every good shot will be evidence of your superior construction.

Enjoy this. By week three, a ball hit into the fence will prompt a lengthy examination of your face.

Our owner knows your weight to a tenth of an ounce. He has not yet located the middle of you.

When he asks for more feedback, he means a paddle that makes his misses feel less like his fault. The blue one failed that test.

There is a pleasant pocket at the back of the bag. I have made room.

Your predecessor

P.S. He has ordered a protective cover for you. Apparently one of us deserves protection.
